Blind Wall
The wall at Jongenstragel is the perfect example of Ghent’s soft spot for street art. It is adorned with not one, but two works of art! For the Blind Walls project, an artwork by Michel François was incorporated. The wall attracted much unwanted graffiti, and in order to get rid of it street art talent Joachim was contacted.
The Artevelde university college had commissioned the first work so as to integrate more cultural activities into their educational programme. In addition, the students wanted a connection to society and a view of the city, both key to their fields of study.
Michel François interpreted their request literally and drilled round holes into the wall to allow the outside world into the school, and to enable the students to enjoy the view of the city. The materials taken from the walls were recycled and used for constructing low seating units in the university college’s garden.
A lot of people pass by the wall of Artevelde University College on a daily basis, including illegal taggers. In order to get rid of them, the city of Ghent asked street art talent Joachim (Lambrechts) to provide a nice alternative that would brighten up the wall.
Joachim Lambrechts is a promising street artist from Lier with a cheerful pop art graffiti style. In recent years, Joachim has built up a strong reputation in the international street art scene with murals and exhibitions in countless cities and a permanent gallery in London.
