The Bridge

Those who thought that Veldstraat had no other purpose than shopping should take a peek at the carriage entrance at number 82. Here you can admire a work of art designed by Koen Broucke which symbolises the connection between Hotel D’Hane-Steenhuyse, Museum Arnold Vander Haeghen and the old Clemmen warehouse, the cultural axis crossing Veldstraat.

Broucke was inspired by the early 19th-century murals found in the Museum Arnold Vander Haeghen which portray many bridges. He named the piece ‘The Bridge’.  Several discarded collection pieces from the Museum of Industry were used to create ‘The Bridge’, referencing the rich industrial past of Ghent and the Clemmen warehouse.

The construction itself is already fascinating. For its execution, an ingenious hanging system made from strong and durable materials was constructed. ‘The Bridge’ is lit from within by means of a parallel system, creating the impression of a chandelier.
