Broche & HD 400
After the Korenmarkt was redeveloped, two vertical artworks by internationally renowned artists Ayşe Erkmen and Ann Veronica Janssens were added. They are intended to position Korenmarkt square as a modern counterpart of the three historical towers and the City Pavilion of Ghent.
In her art, Ayşe Erkmen has integrated the shapes of medieval windows, constructing links that shine like a golden chain. It’s a playful, elegant and impressive creation with a height of no less than 20 metres (65 feet). ‘Broche’ is located at the centuries-old crossroads of Donkersteeg, on the historical route to Brabant that cuts through Ghent.
Ann Veronica Janssens’ design consists of a steel beam of 19 metre height (62 feet) with one polished side. The shadow of the beam and the reflection of the mirroring side create a captivating play of light and shadow. It’s a cat-and-mouse game, interrupted only once a year, when the shadow and reflection align perfectly on 1 May at 4 pm exactly. This impressive artwork was named HD 400, referring to the type of girder used frequently in modern buildings.
