De Vissenwijk in beeld
As if by magic, Ann Cardinael transformed a dark wall into a colourful, cheerful work of art. The local community was involved in its creation. Local residents were asked what they though was typical of their district. Next to friendliness, hospitality and spontaneity, many of the answers made mention of fish and children playing. So the choice of the figurative theme was an easy one, and the qualities were expressed by the cheerful colours. Every single spectator or passer-by was invited to help in the actual creation of the mural, either by lending a hand or by giving critical feedback.
Ann Cardinael aims to add colour to city live by means of endearing images and messages that make passers-by slow down and give them a warm feeling. The artist tries to enhance social cohesion and uses art as a means to bind them.
