'La Sonate du Canal' (De Kanaalsonate)

In 2020, Ghent is paying tribute to Jan Van Eyck with the thematic year 'OMG! Van Eyck was here'. For this reason, the City of Ghent has invited several international top artists to embellish the city centre with a work of art inspired by the Ghent Altarpiece.

The work “La Sonata du Canal” has been on display on the rear wall of the Handelsbeurs (across the water from Ketelvest). Monkey Bird Crew makes a connection with music and instruments from the era of the Ghent Altarpiece and Van Eyck. The monumental Handelsbeurs building, that houses the Ha' Concert Hall, ties seamlessly in which this theme.

Monkey Bird Crew consist of the French duo Louis Boidron and Edouard Egéa. Their timeless murals are inspired by mythology and alchemy. The meaning of their name is closely connected with the symbolic monkeys and birds, a recurrent theme in their works. The monkey stands for realism while the bird represents dreams, and together they are a symbol of the two faces of mankind. The artistic duo is based in Paris and creates large-scale murals all over the world, depicting black-and-white contours of mythical animals with golden accents.
