Mystic Leaves
When you think of Ghent, you think of the Ghent Altarpiece. American artist Jessica Diamond drew inspiration from the plants depicted on the altarpiece. Her creation titled ‘Mystic Leaves’ consists of eighteen leaves, spread across Kouter square. In between the leaf veins you can spot the names of plants and flowers written in Middle Dutch, the language that the Van Eyck brothers spoke.
The leaves have adorned the square since 2011 and have become a fixture of the city. These leaves are also beautifully in line with the flower market that takes place on the square every Sunday morning.
