The Painter of the Sun
Since 2018, Drongen has had a very special inhabitant: De Zonneschilder, a poetic statue by sculptor MaRf. This work of art depicts an artist pretending to paint the sunset in an attempt to capture the intangible beauty of nature.
The name tag on the statue’s toe is a reference to the tag placed on bodies in mortuaries and is a cynical nod to the artistic death of an artist who deems himself able to match nature’s beauty in his art. A poetic statue on a well-suited idyllic spot.
