Roa
In 2020, Ghent is paying tribute to Jan Van Eyck with the thematic year 'OMG! Van Eyck was here'. For this reason, the City of Ghent has invited several international top artists to embellish the city centre with a work of art inspired by the Ghent Altarpiece.
For his artwork on the façade of the Sint-Lucas school of arts, ROA drew inspiration from the metaphorical meaning of the sacrifice, a theme that can also be found in the Ghent Altarpiece. The Mystic Lamb personifies Jesus sacrificing his life to deliver humanity from its sins. The hare is an iconic animal that regularly occurs in the oeuvre of ROA and symbolises rebirth and resurgence.
ROA has been active for over 20 years and is among the top of international street artists. The artist with roots in Ghent works anonymously, but his works can be found all over the world. He regularly works together with renowned art galleries and takes part in art festivals. He is well-known for his detailed black-and-white drawings of rodents, birds, reptiles and threatened species.
