Smaaklik

In 2016 the new Centrumplein square was inaugurated along with Ismail Farouk’s artwork. The installation consists of stacked concrete shapes, spelling out the word ‘SMAAKLIK’, which is Afrikaans for ‘enjoy your meal’. Food and art bring people together. Primarily, the work should serve as a meeting place and is an ideal play, sitting or picnic area.

SMAAKLIK is a fine piece of contemporary South African art. It came about through a collaboration between the city of Ghent and vzw Africalia. During the creation process, South African artist Ismail Farouk stayed in Ledeberg for a few days to observe and get to know the neighbourhood, its residents and the local associations.
